Speak to an attorney before you do any of the following

  • Borrow more money.
  • Leave your job
  • Stop paying health insurance
  • Leave any money in a bank account where you owe money to the same institution
  • Allow a foreclosure
  • Move out of your home or agree to sell it
  • Withdrawal from a pension
  • Make any unusual or large contributions to a pension fund
  • File any past-due income tax returns (You can prepare them, just don’t file them)
  • Agree to pay joint debts if you’re in the middle of a divorce.
  • Reveal to a creditor who holds the title of your car that you’re considering bankruptcy
  • Give a creditor a postdated check
  • Ignore lawsuits
  • Make any gifts (other than charitable contributions that you normally make) or transfer property in an attempt to keep those assets away from creditors.
  • Sell any valuable assets
  • Get married or divorced
  • Call or write to any creditor who does not already know how to contact you
  • Provide information about your income or expenses to any credit counseling or debt consolidation company
  • Make any payments on debts to friends, business partners, or relatives.
